Prepared by: Reo Paolo M. Uri
Have you heard stories about engkantadas? Read this short story about mariang Makiling, an engkantada who lived at the enchanted Mt. Makiling Laguna.
Maria, the Enchentress of Makiling had no peer in beauty or in goodness. Her face was bright as the sun. Her complexion was extremely smooth and fair. Her hair was long and her face was like a virgin's, finely-chiseled and deliberately coloured.
Maria was kind and generous. She would neither punish nor disturb those men who wanted birds and animals who were her pets and companions. Maria would offer them food and drinks when they were hungry and thirsty. She would give then fresh fruits to bring back to the town. There, upon their surprise would turn into gold upon their return home.
In disguise, Maria would walk among, the people in the town. She would attend weddings and feasts and would even give gifts to the people.
Maria loved one thing-white hens. If she ever asked for any gift in return for the good that she did, she would ask for a white hen.
Maria's kindness seemed to have no end. But neither did men's greed know any satisfaction.
The people were not contented with what she gave them. They would often steal from Maria. They would steal ginger in the forest knowing that ginger picked from Makiling would turn into gold. They killed animals and cut down trees. They abused the kindness of Maria.
Soon, Mariang Makiling could not be seen anymore. The people noticed their harvest had dwindled to very little. They felt the absence of Maria.
One night, a heavy storm came and destroyed the countryside. The people heard a loud, vengeful laughter of Mariang Makiling. Now, Whenever people take anything from Mt. Makiling, they are always caught by rains and storms.
